Gary's Clever Gift-Giving Skills

I could tell many stories about how humorous and creative Gary is with gift-giving, starting way back to our very first Valentine's Day together, over seven years ago. Often times there's some form of prank, followed by a cleverly planned, generous surprise.

This year for my birthday, knowing he'd be miles away on February 18th, Gary had to plan ahead even earlier than usual. He sent me this photo on my birthday - a photo he'd taken nearly 3 weeks prior, pointing to the hiding place where he'd tucked away my surprise.

So I opened my email on Thursday to find this picture, along with instructions to find my gift. The box was tucked up high on a shelf we rarely use in our closet. If you're wondering what was inside, it was a great new outfit he bought at REI along with some "fun money," which I am gratefully going to spend on a long-overdue trip to the hair salon. Something I haven't done since last November ~ my hair needs help!

So when Gary gets home on March 2nd, I'll be "fancied up" with a fresh new look and a stylish new outfit.

It has been a long month without Gary here, but the boys and I have gotten lots of help and support from friends and family. Gary calls at least once or twice daily, we see him and his artistic camera work on TV several times a day on our local news, and he's been making special personalized video clips for the boys and me to enjoy online.

He's putting in long work days, getting up by 3:00 a.m. each morning, then taking the train from his hotel to the media's work station in Vancouver (where he's spotted several familiar faces like Matt Lauer, Lester Holt, Brian Williams, Tom Brokaw, etc...which is pretty cool). His days include getting live shots with our local anchor woman/reporter, Carolyn Holly for the Morning Show here in Boise, then traveling all throughout the city and surrounding areas to gather human interest stories with her, and then editing these incredible stories to help bring the Olympics closer to those of us watching from miles away. So from 3 a.m. until he returns to his hotel between 6:00 and 7:00 p.m. -- he's putting in some long hours.

Just a few of the things they've seen and done, then turned into fascinating stories to inform viewers on the Olympic atmosphere include: skiing at Whistler Mountain, riding a zip line over a crowded plaza in downtown Vancouver, riding a ferry out across the bay to a fresh fish market where they tasted sea urchin roe, venturing across a suspension bridge, tasting hemlock needles, flying over the mountains, sea, and city in a float plane, visiting the Vancouver Aquarium, sea-kayaking, and much, much more.... It's a real treat for the boys and me to see all their adventures on TV. We look forward to hearing more about them when Gary gets home one week from today! ☺

Gary -♥- THANK YOU SO MUCH for the wonderful, creative, thoughtful birthday gifts! ♥ We can hardly wait to welcome you home soon! We love & miss you.

Birthday Cake!

After a fun-filled day at the park, Auntie Melissa came over with a beautiful, 2-layer white cake with blueberry cream filling. The boys were grateful to be given the assignment to decorate it with strawberries.

Not only did Melissa bake and bring over this lovely cake, she watched the boys all evening so I could go out for dinner with four of my best girlfriends.

I wonder just how many strawberries didn't make it onto the cake? ☺

Sweet as can be! ♥ (The cake and my handsome little boys!)

Again - THANK YOU SO MUCH, MELISSA! ♥

A Day at the Park

The sun was shining brightly and the weather warmed up for my birthday, so the boys and I walked to our neighborhood park.

Grayson stopped to study a seed pod before we'd even left our driveway.

Gordy's smile

I love this picture - my new screen saver.

Gordy took this self-portrait himself, below. I think he looks just like Gary in this one.

Grayson - "I'm TWO!" (almost 3 already!)

Sweet little Gordon.

Wheeee....!

Grayson watching a lady and her dog play frisbee.

How I love this little face.

What an incredible birthday with my boys!

Night Out with Melissa

Last Thursday was my 1st annual 39th birthday.
You may not know yet that Gary has been gone for most of February, covering the Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia. Since he wouldn't be here for my birthday, he and I went out for a great sushi dinner and saw "Avatar" in 3-D before he left. The birthday celebrations picked up again last week, as family and friends made sure I enjoyed a lovely birthday.

On Tuesday evening, Joey graciously came over to sit with the boys, while Melissa took me out for a pedicure - then dinner downtown.

We enjoyed a delicious dinner and wine...

...topped off with this yummy raspberry sundae at Bonefish Grill.

And - not to spoil your appetite, but here are the results of my very 1st pedicure ever -- my toes never looked better.

Thank you so much, Melissa ~ I had a wonderful time!

Baking Up Treats

Just a few of many photos taken when the boys help bake banana bread...

...carrot cookies...

...peanut butter, oatmeal, chocolate chip cookies...
and more.
Sweet treats with our sweet little guys.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Since Gary is away during most of February (covering the Olympics in Vancouver, B.C.), the boys and I had to plan ahead for Valentine's Day. We packed a framed 5x7 version of this photo in his suitcase, along with some cards and dark chocolate.

I sent this photo to my sweetheart via email -
a wonderful memory of our weekend away in NYC last fall.

And these are my little Valentines, almost always by my side.

How I treasure these precious days with them while they're young.

They are growing so quickly....

So much LOVE!

Happy Valentine's Day to each of you reading this....

Life Goes On....

It's important to remember that even when we're grieving, life goes on. This blog will return to a more joyful and uplifting place, I promise. Already we are finding much joy and comfort in everyday life.

Just today, my sister Melissa, the boys, and I enjoyed a day out and about.
Gordon and Grayson have been amazing reminders of how blessed we are. Their hugs and smiles are incredibly healing for a broken heart. Just look at those sweet faces.

Today was the day I was scheduled for my ultrasound where we were to learn our baby's gender, a special day we were so looking forward to.... Little reminders like this keep popping up, moments when I'm jarred by the reality that our baby boy is gone. But it's also true that each day is getting easier, overall. Gabriel has touched my heart in a way that's changed me, and changed my life.

After lunch today, we drove to the cemetery where Gabriel is buried. St. Luke's provides a special memorial garden for miscarried babies. What a precious place.

This memorial garden will be even more beautiful when the grass is green, the roses are in bloom, and the nearby trees have leaves. I was happy to see the lovely view of snow-covered mountains in the distance from where I stood today.

Gordon asked auntie Lassa to help him get flowers for me this afternoon; such a sweetheart. How fortunate we have been to have Melissa here these past several weeks. She has been an absolute blessing, taking care of all of us during this difficult time.

Again, I cannot thank our loved ones enough for all the prayers and encouragement being sent our way. We continue to lean on our faith and the promise of eternity in Heaven. A friend reminded me today what the name Gabriel means: "God is my strength."
